China can't stand Taiwan President's independence speech. Beijing's using it to hinder peace
|
|
May 29, 2024
By: Sana Hashimi
Beijing won't engage with Taiwanese President Lai Ching Te because it perceives him as a separatist and an agitator.
Taiwan's new President, Lai Ching-te, secured its historic third term for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) last January 2024 in Taiwan. President Lai sparked controversy with his inaugural speech, which China strongly condemned as a
"confession of Taiwan independence." Moreover, President Lai also called on China to respect Taiwan's existence and engage in dialogue based on principles of reciprocity and dignity.
As an response, China has warned Taiwan of reprisals and accusing Lai of inciting conflict. The author noted that many analysts of the cross-strait relations of Taiwan and China adhere closely to the government's stance. An example of this is Victor Gao, the vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, who deemed Lai's speech as a "tantamount to a declaration of war." Three days after Lai's inauguration, China conducted to a two-day military exercise across the islands of Taiwan. China's state-owned media framed the exercise as a form of punishment directed at the Taiwan separatists, issuing a severe warning against external interference or provocation.
